Thought leadership is a term we hear a lot these days. But what is it? And why is nonpromotional thought leadership so valuable?

What is Thought Leadership?

There are various definitions of a “thought leader.” Wikipedia keeps it simple: A thought leader is a person who specializes in a given area and whom others in that industry turn to for guidance.

Expanded definitions add that it involves sharing unique insights, perspectives, and expertise that influence others and shape the conversation within that field.

Why Nonpromotional Thought Leadership is So Valuable

In a recent Forbes Coaches Council article, my colleagues and I talked about the most meaningful benefits of sharing helpful content that does NOT involve a sales pitch.

Some of the benefits that resonated the most with me include:

  • Allows you to reflect on your ideas
  • Helps begin conversations
  • Attracts thoughtful people and meaningful dialogue
  • Builds genuine connections and trust

My Experience with Thought Leadership – It’s a Conversation

Years ago, early into the pandemic, I stepped into something new for me – a video series on LinkedIn. Every other Thursday, whether I’m in my home office or in transit, I  share my #thursdaythoughts via a short 4-minute(ish) video on topics that include everything from team development to transparency to transitioning into executive leadership (and more).

Every two weeks, I engage in a dialogue with my followers, peers and clients on LinkedIn, inviting them to participate. Their thoughts (your thoughts) are invaluable to me and everyone involved. In my experience, the best thought leadership work is not a one-way street. Instead, it’s a conversation that helps me refine my thinking on topics we’re all facing.

I’m so grateful to my peers and clients who join me in shaping solid theories and navigating through these challenging times.
